Beethoven: Violin Sonatas, Vol. 1
John Paul Ekins and Henry Chandler decided to commemorate Beethoven's 250th birthday by recording all ten of his stunning violin sonatas.
Beethoven composed them over fourteen years from 1798 to 1812, during a time of great development and pioneering change in his compositional style. His revolutionary approach to the violin and piano as a duo was to shape every major sonata that was to come thereafter.
The recording took place at St. Mary's Church in Barnes - together with its special acoustic and beautiful Steinway D, this venue lends an intimate and personalised soundworld for this iconic chamber music project.
Volume 1 consists of the following works, available below as Spotify links:
Sonata in D, Op.12/1
I. Allegro con brio
II. Tema con variazioni
III. Rondo (Allegro)
Sonata in A, Op.12/2
I. Allegro vivace
II. Andante più tosto allegretto
III. Allegro piacevole
Sonata in Eb, Op.12/3
I. Allegro con spirito
II. Adagio con molta espressione
III. Rondo (Allegro molto)
